● Helped to create SWC’s EOPS Program. Worked as an adjunct for 11 months before being hired as a full-time tenure-track EOPS Counselor. Our EOPS Program grew from 300 to 3000 students during the 8 years I worked as an EOPS Counselor.
● As a Counselor in EOPS helped launch our Summer Bridge Program for very recently graduated high school seniors.
● As a General Counselor- provision of academic, career, and personal counseling:
○ Creation of student education and semester-by-semester plans.
○ Creator and facilitator of multiple career workshops such as Certificate Workshop, Career and Technical Associate Degree Workshops, Transfer Associate Degree, Careers in Psychology, Careers in Social Work, Careers in the Health Sciences, Careers in Education workshops and more.
● As a Counselor Professor, I have taught over 150 class sessions of Personal Development and Learning Skills classes:
I have utilized the “Master Student”, “Career Fitness”, and “On Course” textbooks as well as open-source materials. I have taught Educational and Career Goal-setting, Reading Skills, Note-taking, Test-taking, Organizational and Time Management Skills, as well as Motivation and Emotional Intelligence Skills as a Basic Skills Professor in the SWC Retention Program for students on Academic Probation and Disqualification status, as well as teaching these classes as part on my General Counseling assignment.
● Teaching Personal Development classes as part of the Freshmen Year Experience Program (FYE).
● Created and taught Personal Development 105-Student Leadership to Associated Student Organization and SWC Student Club Leaders.
EOPS Counselor, 1990-1998
Extended Opportunities and Extended Services Program, Southwestern College
Provided academic, personal, and career counseling to underrepresented and low-income students. Developed individual student education and semester-by-semester plans. Referred students to relevant student service programs, including tutoring, employment, and financial aid. Developed over-and-above student retention activities, programs, and workshops. Workshops developed included study skills, communication skills, stress management, major-specific, and transfer workshops. Participated in EOPS planning, site reviews, and self-studies. Taught in the Summer Readiness Program (SRP), which targets newly admitted college freshmen. SRP received a statewide award. Trained and supervised peer advisors during the first year of the program. Program grew from 300 to 1700 in 7 years. Many programs developed in EOPS were adopted campus-wide.
Professional Service:
Executive Board Member-Secretary, California Community College Association: Elected to serve on the statewide executive board of the California Community College Association (CCA). The CCA oversees 42 faculty unions as part of the overall 116 community colleges in the California Community College System. Helped to organize and attended monthly meetings, workshops, and statewide conferences. Helped to create and enforce organizational bylaws. Met with staff and with individual chapters. As the Executive Board Secretary, my committee helped to set up our organization’s website.

ESCALA Training - Educational Services - Hispanic Serving Institutes: This training focuses on increasing and improving educational outcomes first for Hispanic students and ultimately for all students. Professors are asked to review and to change instructional design that measures student understanding of and mastery of learning goals by intentionally improving relatedness in the classroom. Additionally, to highlight, celebrate, and promote Chicano/Latino accomplishments, and lastly, to provide a forum for the discussion of issues affecting Chicano/Latino staff, faculty, and students.
MANA-Chicana/Latina Women’s Organization San Diego, CA: MANA de San Diego’s mission is to empower Latinas through education, leadership development, and community service. Founded in 1986, MANA has grown to more than 1,200 members and supporters. MANA’s Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor Program provides one-on-one mentoring for Latinas ages 12-18 and encourages them in the pursuit of higher education.
Chicano Youth Leadership Training Facilitator CYLP) Chula Vista, California: The mission of CYLP is to enhance and build the leadership potential of California’s youth, to build communities, and create a stronger, more prosperous state and nation.
Co-Director Latino/Latina Leadership Conference: Served as the Co-Director of the Latino/Latina Leadership Conference. This event was held on a yearly basis over a week-long period at NCCJ Campgrounds in Pasadena. Students from California State Universities (CSU’s), University of California (UC), and private and community college campuses throughout Southern California participated. Students met in Familia’s, small group, and large group meetings. Topics covered in facilitated small and large group settings included Identity, Sexism, Racism, Homophobia, Educational Access and Success, Community Issues, Leadership, Advocacy, and Activism.
Facilitator, National Conference of Christians and Jews: Facilitator for Human Relations Training offered by the NCCJ. Topics covered in facilitated small and large group settings for teachers, police department/s and educational institutions included Identity, Sexism, Racism, Homophobia, Educational Access, and Success, Community Issues, Leadership, and Advocacy, and Activism.
South Bay Forum-Founding Member Chula Vista, CA: This community-based Political Action Committee was founded in 1998 and ran through 2013 with a hiatus from 2013 to 2018. The focus of the committee was to recruit and to increase the number of elected Latino/as in all elected seats including City Councils, School Boards, and state and federal offices.
Southwest Voter Registration Campaign (SVREP), Riverside, CA: SVREP is a non-profit organization empowering Latino and Latinas to register to vote.
